I'm new here, but I've been stalking for a few months! I am the usual American sports fan. Love football and soccer was a fringe sport for me as a youth; played in 8th grade. But, I did go to a few Dallas Tornado games back in the day! In college, my core group of friends included two Germans and a Colombian! They introduced me to World Cup soccer, and I watched my first final in 1986. I think it was in Mexico City that year. In 1990, I went with one of my German buddies to an English pub in Dallas to watch England/Germany in the WC. Germany won, and while in the men's room, a very drunk English dude was pounding his head on the wall! I told Frank to shut his mouth and let's get out of here! Once outside, we are in my friend's car and we see drunk English dude. Frank yells go Germany, and drunk English dude starts chasing us on foot as we drive away! Very funny memory, but I digress!
In 1993, we learned the WC was coming to Dallas. My friends and I bought tickets to all of the games at the Cotton Bowl, and we warmed up by going to a friendly with a local team v. Kaiserslautern. I think Kaiserslautern had a Team USA player on their team that year. It was a blow out, but fun.
I've been to hundreds of sporting events. My dad and I were Cowboys season ticket holders for many years, and I have seen my share of memorable games. I was even there for Nolan's 5000th strikeout. But, the absolute coolest thing I've ever seen at a sporting event was walking into the Cotton Bowl for the first game of the '94 World Cup; Spain v. South Korea. First, we are going through the security with fans of Spain singing. Then, we walk into the Cotton Bowl. Flags draped everywhere. It sent chills down my spine. It was awesome! The game was great, I think a draw? Then we went to Cafe Madrid and partied with Spain fans and watched on TV a curious white Ford Bronco being chased by cops!
The rest of the Cotton Bowl WC matches were great, but none were as spectacular as that first moment. The Nigerians were so cool and fun, the South Korean team hustled there arses off, and the Sweden fans were so much fun. Other than the heat, it was greatness.
After that, I continued to watch the World Cup. I even got up in the wee hours for the WC in S. Korea. But, I never got into Euro club soccer; until last year. I finally realized I have Fox Soccer, FS+, and GolTV. I decided to adopt a team, but what team to adopt? I decided I wanted a team from London so I'd have a realistic shot at going there someday to actually see them. Also, I wanted a team that would be on TV frequently so I can watch the matches. The previous year I did come across a Man U/Chelsea match, and I remember not wanting to root for Man U! Thus, I decided Chelsea would be my team. I'm on my second season as a Chelsea fan, and I must say the Champions League victory last year felt as good as my Mavs winning the NBA championship a few years ago!
So, there it is. I'm hooked. I know this is not a handicapping thread, but I thought I'd introduce myself and let you know why I'm here. Best of luck guys!
